MEET AN EXPERT Name: Dr Joanna McMillan, PhD Expertise: Nutrition Website: www.getlean.com.au / www.drjoanna.com.au You may recognise Dr Joanna McMillan from the tellie or the radio, or maybe you’ve seen her in a printed advertisement. The reason she’s everywhere is because when it comes to nutrition, Dr Joanna really knows her stuff! Describe your day job, or a typical day in your life I run my own business Dr Joanna, which allows me the flexibility to also be mum to my two boys who are aged 7 and 9. They spend a week with me and a week with their dad, so my typical day will vary depending on which week we are in. On my kid week I do school drop offs and pick ups, trying hard not to use after school care so that I can see them as much as possible. I then try to do a workout and my own work during school hours – though this is not always easy, of course! On my other week I work longer hours, do any interstate trips and have more of a social life! My work consists of writing content, filming videos, usually a weekly Today show segment, public speaking gigs and creating additional content for my online program. I also develop recipes, so you may find me in the kitchen or on a photoshoot with my amazing team. What’s the most common nutrition myth you’ve come across? There are many, but I think the one that I am constantly having to discuss is the ‘carbs make you fat’ myth. Carbs are not a food group – they are a class of macronutrient in foods (the other macronutrients are fat and protein). To classify ‘carbs’ as a single group is just nutritional nonsense. What does ‘optimum health’ mean to you? Feeling like you are firing on all cylinders and able to tackle life with enthusiasm. It’s more than avoiding disease, but looking, feeling and performing at your best. And you can only do that when you are eating well, managing stress, achieving your definition of a work/life balance, sleeping well, being active and spending time doing things you are passionate about.  What are you working on at the moment? My online membership program Get Lean (getlean.com.au) – it’s not just another weight loss system but, in fact, it’s a totally fresh way of looking at things. There is no start, nor end – Get Lean is a lifestyle; a way you choose to live your life. I teach you a template for eating healthily so that you can then make your own decisions, whether you are cooking at home or eating out. I give you lots of meal ideas and recipes, but I don’t tell you what to eat per se. As part of the program you receive additional information (via blogs and videos) to help you live a healthy lifestyle such as exercise, sleep and stress management, and you’ll get a motivational email from me every week that also includes even more resources to help you live the best life you can. Get Lean is for everyone interested in getting lean and staying lean. You can find out more or join up at getlean.com.au ( OH! MAGAZINE ) ISSUE 6 9
