THE PALEO WAY

Analee Matthews swapped biscuits for bone broth in the pursuit of good health . Here ’ s what she discovered along the [ Paleo ] way .
or many , the word ‘ Paleo ’ conjures
F up some pretty passionately
resistant responses from individuals far and wide . But I get why ; because when I put my hand up to roadtest the Paleo Way of eating , to once and for all see what all the fuss is about , I can tell you honestly … there were times where I felt like I was being dragged kicking and screaming in the opposite direction from my beloved dairy , grains and sugar .
However , about three or four weeks into the program , after my body had finally conceded and adjusted to the absence of what had previously been staples in my everyday diet ( i . e ., bread , confectionary and the like ), I realised I actually felt pretty darn amazing . I wasn ’ t so tired all the time . The afternoon slumps had vanished , I ’ d dropped a bit of weight , I felt like I was sleeping better at night and enjoying more energy during the day . What was probably most surprising to me was the fact that when you replace things like bread with heaps of vegetables , you actually don ’ t feel very hungry throughout the day . I felt no desire to snack . I rarely felt hungry before the next mealtime arrived , and on an emotional level I felt really good having put gorgeous nutrients into my body at every sitting .
The Paleo Way was established by celebrity chef Pete Evans , who is infamous for his – according to the Dietitians Association of Australia and many of its members – lack of recognised nutrition qualifications . However , having personally completed the program and witnessed first-hand the benefits received by someone who had previously suffered from chronic fatigue for the past nine years , I have to say it really can significantly enhance the health of some people !
Now , full disclosure – despite the great results I felt while on the program , unlike the individual in my case study I , personally , have not continued the program beyond the ten weeks . I definitely eat a lot less sugary treats and bread these days , but I still consume some of them and suck down a decent amount of black tea with milk every single day . However , I do feel the a positive difference having reduced the volume of my consumption compared to my pre-program consumption levels . The great thing is , I ’ ve experienced the benefits of the Paleo Way first-hand and so know I can go back there again if I feel I need to in the future . The online course itself , I found really indepth . It provided meal plans and recipes , with mouth-watering imagery
CASE STUDY
42-YEAR-OLD MALE WITH A NINE-YEAR HISTORY OF CHRONIC FATIGUE What made you want to try the Paleo Way ? It sounded like a good idea . I needed a set plan to go gluten and sugar free as a way to help me gain more energy .
Can you describe the health benefits you feel you ’ ve received ? I gained loads more energy , my thinking was so much clearer , I no longer get food cravings and I lost 7kg over 10 weeks .
What was the most difficult part of the program for you ? Going through detox was tough , as my body adjusted to the absence of sugar , wheat , grains , gluten and dairy . But that soon cleared up and afterwards I started to feel really good .
What was the easiest part of the program or the part you enjoyed the most ? The recipes are great . Even if you don ’ t stick to them exactly , they act as inspiration and a good guide as to what you can create . And there ’ s no lack of flavour or an opportunity to get bored eating Paleo . Once you get your head around what you can do and focus on that ( rather than what you can ’ t eat ), it ’ s actually not that hard at all . And it all feels even easier when the results start coming through .
Will you stick with it for the long term ? Absolutely yep . I ’ ll definitely will stick with it for the long term .

and a nice level of communication to keep me motivated and on track . It also integrated the expertise from other specialists who provide information about exercise , nutrition and motivation , which I also found helpful .
Of course , like everything in the health and fitness industry , what works for one person may not suit another . So the Paleo Way should be considered just another tool that people on a quest for optimum health can try if they want to . As with all the information we provide in this magazine , we don ’ t recommend you do or you don ’ t – our goal is simply to provide you with information and encourage you to determine if it ’ s something that will work for you .
