CROSS BORDER INFORMATION
No entry visas are required for South African citizens entering Botswana, but
you will need to pay fees for the vehicle (see below).
At immigration we advise adding on a few more days than needed, in case
of delay / emergency during your stay - this will save the hassle of a trip to an

Meat Regulations: The regulations for importing meat for private use change
importing meat and meat products. The following may be imported for
private use with an import permit: Red meat (25 kg/family), poultry (5 kg/

fresh milk and vegetables. Firearms, narcotic and habit-forming drugs and
indecent and obscene material are prohibited. There are veterinary control
there, depending on prevailing diseases. Botswana’s meat is good and reasonably priced. We recommend that you buy it there.

• Border Charges: Vehicles registered in SACU (SA, Namibia, Botswana,
Lesotho and Swaziland) are charged the following fees:
o Road Transport Permit P50/P90 (P50 for a single entry and P90
for a return trip)
o National Road Safety (Road Fund Tax) P20 (valid for one year
up to 31 December; display the disc); P20 will also be charged
on a trailer
o Third-Party Insurance P50 (mini buses and buses will pay a
higher fee) – valid for 90 days
o Temporary Import Permit (TIP) - this form will be issued at
the border post on entry to cars registered in Kenya, Uganda,
Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia
and Mozambique

• Medical Insurance: Recommended
• No equipment is mandatory, but it is recommended you have two
emergency triangles
