‘ I had only one moment , maybe two . One was going into Brooklands ; I braked too hard and locked the wheels , and thought I was going straight off . That gravel trap there is horrible , there ’ s no way you can get through that one . Then going into Abbey I just couldn ’ t see , not even what line I was on . I had already gone wide in the previous two corners and the car was skidding everywhere . I just said to myself , “ Keep it cool ”; I was 40 or 50 seconds ahead , so there was no need to push , and I took it steadily from then .’ He dedicated this one to his family . ‘ I ’ ve had some troubles in the last few weeks but as always my family was there to support me . Before the race my brother Nic said , “ Don ’ t worry , it ’ ll be all right . You ’ re the master in the wet ”.’
That evening at Silverstone , that was a mantra taken up by all those who witnessed one of the most crushing demonstrations in F1 ® history . •
