McLaren has won the British Grand Prix 14 times , the first victory achieved by American Peter Revson back in 1973 , and the most recent by Lewis Hamilton in 2008 . Can Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri add to that total this weekend ?
It was at this race last year that McLaren began a spectacular turnaround as it built on an update package introduced at the previous race in Austria , with Norris starting and finishing second and even leading a few laps .
That momentum was maintained into 2024 , and on recent form McLaren looks set to be a real contender here , given that the MCL38 has been competitive across a range of tracks since Norris scored a memorable first win in Miami . His pole position in Barcelona last month was another important milestone , although he just fell short of toppling Verstappen in the race as he logged his fourth runner-up spot of the year .
Meanwhile in his second season Oscar Piastri has taken big strides and took an impressive second place of his own in Monaco .
However , to beat Red Bull you have to get everything right , and achieving that level of perfection with strategy calls and the like isn ’ t easy .
If the Woking team does score a 15th British victory on Sunday , Ferrari will still remain a couple of steps ahead on 18 British wins , although to be fair many of them were achieved before McLaren entered the sport .
