Delano American Legion The Delano American Legion Post 377 was first founded in 1919 and chartered in 1924. The current commander is Jeremy Christenson and the first vice commander and membership director is Ken Beamish. The adjutant is Mike Brandenburg, finance officer Tim Falde, Sergeant at Arms Carl Janzen, and chaplain Joel Branis. Post 377 is actively involved with the following projects: Delano Fourth of July Celebration; Memorial Day; Veterans Day; veterans’ funerals; Legion Baseball; Girls and Boys State; essay scholarship contest; and a variety of other activities that support Americanism education, veterans, and children and youth. The Post holds regular meetings on the first Monday of the month. There are more than 500 members in the Legion Family which includes: Post 377, the Delano American Legion Auxiliary, President Tracey Gurneau; the Delano Sons of the American Legion (SAL), President Brian Blowers; and American Legion Riders, Director Stephen Garrison. This is a very active post, not only in the community, but also in the district. The organization had two past district commanders and three district presidents. Delano Area Community Foundation The Delano Area Community Foundation was founded in 1997 to start an endowment for the Delano area. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life for the Delano are community through grants and initiatives. It offers an excellent opportunity for any person to make lasting contributions to the Delano area, both as a board member or a donor. Donations are tax-deductible. Its goal is to connect with those who share our lifetime passion for the people and community of Delano. Its donors are as varied as the community it serves. Led by president, Sarah Hellmich, the foundation meets three to four times a year. It awards financial grants to 501(c)(3) organizations with projects to make Delano a wonderful place to live. It has sponsored projects for the Delano Senior Center, Community Ed, and community-wide Old-Fashioned Christmas. The 2020 grant application period will be open Sept. 7-Oct. 24. Delano Area Council for Arts and Culture Delano Area Council for Arts and Culture began in 2009 to promote collaboration and provide support to other community arts and cultural organizations. Its Mission is: Empower people to think, work and live creatively through arts and cultural experiences. It provides art and cultural events for all ages. A major annual event is Delano Old-Fashioned Christmas. It is a day filled with arts and crafts, musical performances, drama, and food. An outdoor market and boutiques located in the downtown area help support local organizations, artisans, local restaurants, and small home based businesses. With activities for all ages, this event brings the community together to kick off the Christmas season. The City of Delano and the Arts Council established the Highway 12 Sculpture Park in May 2007. The Arts Council is actively looking for local artists to submit proposals for additional sculptures. The DACAC supports the Delano Community Band, which performs concerts around town, including at the 4th of July celebration. Anyone who has ever played an instrument and would like to get started again is invited to join the band. The Sidewalk Art contest is organized and staffed by Arts Council members for Delano’s 4th of July Family Day. “Spark Art” is a project to recognize local artists and bring art to the downtown area, sponsored by the Delano Park and Recreation Commission and the Arts Council. The Arts Council is always looking for new members. Members don’t have to be artists, but just need to appreciate the value that the arts has on the community.
