Mungella Wetlands, Queensland Avondale Farm, Noongar Country
This planting is part of Greening
Australia’s Reef Aid initiative – which
works to improve water quality on
the Great Barrier Reef by working
with landholders to rebuild eroding
gullies and restore vital coastal
wetlands across the catchment.
After climate change, poor water
quality is the greatest local threat
to the future of the reef. Every year,
millions of tonnes of fine sediment
flow from eroding land onto the
reef, choking fish and coral, and
reducing its ability to recover from
the impacts of climate change. By
restoring wetlands along the coast,
water quality is improved by up to
97% and can therefore play a key
role in protecting the reef. Located around 120km east of
Perth, this farm is owned by a family
group of traditional Ballardong
Noongar landholders. Greening
Australia has been working with
them since 2008, to restore the
land to the original condition,
which is achieved through strategic
revegetation. The 35,000 trees that
we will be planting here will create
new habitat for the endangered
Black Cockatoos of WA.
