Office of Extended Learning and Support ExLS portfolio V.4 | Page 2

Welcome words from the Executive Director On May 2010, the San Francisco Board of Education voted to adopt the new “a-g” high school graduation requirements beginning with the Class of 2014. These requirements align with the “a-g” course sequence prescribed by the University of California and California State University that students need for college admission. Our goal as educators is to provide every SFUSD high school student an opportunity to achieve their post-secondary dream of pursing a college experience and meaningful career. With support from the citizens of San Francisco and city partners through the Public Education and Enrichment Fund (PEEF), SFUSD launched a large-scale effort to provide multiple credit recovery and earning options for our high school students in spring 2013. As a result, the Office of Extended Learning and Support (ExLS) was established to design and implement a portfolio of credit recovery and earning options for all SFUSD students. Students, who were not meeting the a-g requirements or had not earned enough credits for graduation, now can earn course credits through evening school, summer school and online learning. Most recently, ExLS also has begun providing local school sites critical “sprout” funds to support the design and implementation of innovative academic programs at all levels that meet the needs of their student populations. The Office of Extended Learning and Support is steadfast in serving all SFUSD students using the paradigm of the District’s strategic goals as the core to our mission. Sincerely, Bill W.
