Dominica's First Gender Equality Indicators (GEI)

Report Launched

The first ever Gender Equality Indicators (GEI) report for Dominica was officially launched on 5 October, 2016.

The Report was launched ahead of a meeting of high level policy-makers who responded to Dominica’s readiness to achieve programmes for gender equality and equity, commit to programmes that facilitate the completion of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and other gender equality indicators and the monitoring of trends to sustain gender equity.

Head, UN Women Multicountry Office for the Caribbean, Tonni Ann Broder remarked, “At the regional level, CARICOM, in partnership with UN Women, have developed the CARICOM Gender Equality Indicators which will support Member States with monitoring progress on the Sustainable Development Goals as a whole and in specific SDG goal 5 which is the stand alone goal on gender equality and women empowerment, and the gender dimensions of all of the SDGs as they are interrelated.

She also noted that, “The CARICOM Gender Equality Indicators measures 25 of the 52 Gender Equality Indicators and out of the four countries in the CARICOM region piloting CGEI, Dominica is the only one that chose to be ambitious and measure the entire global set of 52 which is a notable achievement.”

Hon Minister for Trade, Ian Douglas represented the Hon Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit at launch. “These indicators will enable sustainability for the generation of specific socio-economic statistics including sex disaggregated data across member states in the CARICOM region as well as improve methodology to measure changes in the status and situation of men and women at the national and regional level.

“Dominica has produced a report on the gender equality indicators - the first ever in the CARICOM region and that is absolutely commendable. This has been highly recognized as the pioneering and formidable effort on the part of our country,” he remarked.

Hon Douglas noted that the launch of the report was mainly to “present and support Dominica’s work to measure and address gender equality, and the regional and global recognition of Dominica as the best practice for compilation of gender indicators for implementation of programs for measurement and monitoring.”
