OECS Education Statistical Digest 2013 / 2014 | Page 24

1. Education Institutions

This section describes educational institutions across member states by level of education and type of ownership that is whether, public, private: church assisted or private: non-affiliated. In some Member States, private church assisted and private non-affiliated schools receive technical and/or financial assistance from the government. There are four distinct levels in the education system in the OECS:

Early childhood/pre-primary

Primary

Secondary

Post-secondary/Tertiary and Non Tertiary Institutions

For the purposes of this document, early childhood education focuses on the two years immediately preceding compulsory education and caters to children between the ages of three and five years. Formal care and education at this level occur in a mix of nurseries, day-care centres, crèches and pre-schools.

Data presented indicates a significant proportion of coverage is provided through the private sector (84%).

The majority of primary (65%) and secondary (62%) schools in the OECS are government owned and operated. The only exception based on available data is Grenada where 51% of primary schools are private church assisted primary schools while the private non-affiliated account for a mere 26%. At the secondary level 58% of the secondary schools are private church-assisted and 13% are private non-affiliated schools. Private primary schools in some Member States (Montserrat and St Vincent and the Grenadines to name two) receive some level of assistance from their respective governments.
