Both its Latin (Leonurus cardiaca) and common name indicate this plant's ancient usage as a treatment during childbirth and as an effective heart-strengthening remedy. Like other members of the mint family, motherwort is a protective herb, particularly effective for mothers and children. In the garden: A member of the mint family, motherwort can spread quickly. In colder areas it will die back after frosts but will reappear as soon as spring warms up. It is an attractive plant with pretty pink flowers in summer, which attract beneficial insects. Grow this hardy perennial from seedlings or divide from an existing plant and position in full sun to semi-shade in well-drained soil.
