Moving
You have found your off-campus housing, reviewed and signed the lease, and turned on the utilities. Good job!
The next step is moving your belongings to your new space. Save yourself the headache and organize your move.
Follow this quick and easy moving checklist:
Mailing Address
Fill out a change of address form with the United States Postal Service( USPS. com / move) Update your address with Old Dominion University through your myodu. edu portal. Enter your new address into“ current address.” Keep your“ permanent address” as somewhere you want to receive important mailing documents. Updating your current address will help the University locate you in an emergency. Update the address on your driver’ s license. Let important contacts know you have changed your address.
Communicating with Landlord / Roommates
Communicate with roommates about what items may need to be purchased for common areas. Arrange a time to pick up key from the landlord and( preferably) conduct a joint unit inspection.
Unit Inspection
Moving
Make sure you complete a unit inspection shortly after moving in. If your landlord does not provide a unit inspection form for you, print one off of ODU’ s Off-Campus Student Life webpage, http:// blue. odu. edu / housing / off-campus. php. Take pictures of the condition of the apartment before moving belongings into the unit. If something needs to be repaired, put in a request to fix it immediately and note it on the unit inspection form. Make sure you return the unit inspection form to your landlord as soon as possible. Keep a copy of the form for your records.
Pack your belongings. This will give you the opportunity to sort through your belongings and donate, store, or throw away items you do not need. Obtain moving supplies. Tip: Sometimes local grocery stores have extra boxes that you can get for FREE. Some local grocery stores you can contact are: Farm Fresh, 730 W. 21st St., 757-625-2705 and Food Lion, 2401 Colley Ave., 757-626-3936. Schedule movers or find some moving buddies.
