The latest film news and previews from ODEON... Rogue One A Star Wars Story Rebel spies plot to steal the plans to the Death Star in this all-new Star Wars adventure If you’re a Star Wars fan, then it’s a good time to be alive. Scratch that, it’s a marvellous time to be alive. Shortly after Disney bought Lucasfilm (the company behind Star Wars I-VI) in 2012, the House of Mouse announced that, in addition to a new trilogy, it would also be producing a series of standalone ‘anthology’ films, i.e. tales set in the Star Wars universe but unconnected to the central saga. What this boils down to, ladies and gents, boys and girls, is a new Star Wars film every year for the foreseeable future. Now that is marvellous! PHOTO: © 2015 Lucasfilm Ltd. 15 DEC As with last year’s Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, details about the first of these anthology films are sketchy, but what we do know is this: it’s called Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and it’s set between Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV – A New Hope. It stars The Theory of Everything’s Felicity Jones (a Brit, born and bred) as the gutsy Jyn Erso and follows the exploits of a group of Resistance fighters (including Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera) as they attempt to steal the plans to the first Death Star. But the Empire, led by the terrifying Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), is determined to stop them... Perhaps most excitingly, Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards. Edwards came to prominence in 2010 with Monsters, a beautifully told sci-fi drama made on a minuscule budget. He followed this up in 2014 with the critically popular Godzilla revamp, proving that he doesn’t just tell great stories – he can shoot a mean action sequence, too. “Good guys are bad. Bad guys are good. It’s complicated, layered: a very rich scenario in which to set a movie,” says Edwards of Rogue One. It’s official – we can’t wait!
