Adams plays Dr. Louise Banks, a world-renowned linguistics professor teaching at a university in the northeast United States. While lecturing one day, Banks is interrupted by the repeated ‘pinging’ of her students’ mobile phones. In due course she learns that 12 mysterious spacecraft have touched down at 12 different points across the globe. Hired by the American government to communicate with these extra-terrestrial visitors – known in Ufology as a close encounter of the fifth kind – Banks must find out why they are here... and fast. Mankind’s future depends on it! Hooked? You’re not alone. Arrival received its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, where it garnered rave reviews. Time Out praised “its smart ideas and bravura visuals” and The Hollywood Reporter heralded “its brains and originality”, while describing Adams’ performance as “rich in emotional depth”.
