The Mummy
Welcome to a New World of Gods and Monsters!
Starring Tom Cruise
and Sofia Boutella,
The Mummy is an
action-heavy reboot of The
Mummy franchise. (Nope, not
the one with Brendan Fraser
from the late 1990s, rather the
classic horrors of the 30s, 40s
and 50s – although they are
all produced by Universal.)
It’s also a vehicle for Tom
Cruise, of course, whose career
has been a little on the quiet
side of late. The film, which
puts the emphasis on lung-
bursting action rather than
skin-crawling horror gives
Cruise (now in his mid-50s
would you believe?) the

chance to flex his muscles and
he does so with oomph. Indeed,
the helicopter ‘evacuation’ is
worth the admission fee alone.
As for the story, well, that
sees an entombed ancient
Egyptian priestess waking up
in modern times with a heck
of a chip on her bony shoulders.
Incidentally, the film’s tagline
(and our intro): “Welcome
to a New World of Gods and
Monsters,” is a line from the
classic 1935 Universal movie,
Bride of Frankenstein, starring
the iconic Boris Karloff.
MONSTER MASH
The Mummy is the first instalment
in the Universal Monsters shared
universe series, with big-screen
outings in the works for such classic
screen ghouls as Frankenstein’s
Monster and The Invisible Man.
