The BFG PHOTO: © 2016 Storyteller Distribution Co., LLC This live-action version of Roald Dahl’s much-loved children’s novel looks absolutely ‘delumptious’! July is a massive month for film 22 JULY releases, and we kick off this Coming Soon section with a production that’s not just big in terms of budget and director, but also its title character. We are, of course, talking about The BFG. This epic live-action film is adapted from Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s novel, which became an instant classic upon its release in 1982. An animated television production followed in 1989, with Only Fools and Horses’ David Jason voicing everyone’s favourite ‘Big Friendly Giant’. This too was met with universal acclaim, with The Sunday Telegraph calling it “a delight”. So how does this latest adaptation stand up? Well, with Steven Spielberg at the helm, the answer is brilliantly. Boasting some jaw-dropping effects, the film (wisely) sticks to the story Dahl so brilliantly brought to life, with young Ruby Barnhill in the role of Sophie. During the witching hour (which is 3am rather than midnight in Dahl’s world), this inquisitive little orphan catches glimpse of a 24-foot man going about his dreamcollecting (and distributing) work in old London town. And so begins an extraordinary adventure involving snozzcumbers, man-eating giants and, oh yes, the Queen of England. With Mark Rylance (who won an Oscar for his superb turn as Rudolf Abel in 2015’s Bridge of Spies – also directed by Spielberg) playing The BFG, this is enormous fun for all the family – in every sense of the word. Don’t miss it! We hope he washes behind them... 4 odeon.co.uk Did You w?s Kno th , e BBC’ In 2003 ran a survey The Big Read the nation’s e to determin l.
