Melissa McCarthy gives James Bond a run for his
money in Spy, a comedy about an ordinary woman
thrown into an extraordinary world…

I
t's probably fair to say
that Melissa McCarthy
and writer-director Paul
Feig must really like
each other, given that Spy is their
third project together – following
on from the massive hit that was
Bridesmaids, as well as The Heat,
their cop caper from 2013.
According to Feig, a lot of it is
down to the fact that they share
the same sense of humour.
According to McCarthy, it's
because he's just so damn good.
“Paul is great, he makes great
movies, and I’ve latched onto him
like a barnacle,” she laughs.

So what's the deal with this, their
latest comedy? A huge fan of spy
films, Feig decided that he wanted
to make one himself, setting it in
such glamorous locations as Rome,
Paris and Budapest as well as
utilising all the fun cliches that
usually pop up in the genre, like
villain's lairs, explosive setpieces
and cunning disguises (although
007 certainly never went
undercover as a crazy cat lady…).
Rather than focus on an agent
who's been doing the spy business
for years, however, he decided to
make his lead character come from
a little more left-field.
