PHOTO: © 2015 THE NETHERLANDS FILM ACADEMY ‘What was once in the deep is now in the shallows…’ That’s the cracking 12 AUG tagline for this water-based survival horror starring Blake Lively (Green Lantern). Lively is Nancy, a young woman who gets attacked by a great white shark while surfing near a secluded beach. Despite her injuries, she manages to make it to the relative safety of a large rock, just 200 yards from shore. But there’s no one around to help her, and the monstrous predator isn’t going to give up its dinner that easily. What follows is an incredibly tense stand-off (seriously, you’ll be gripping the edge of your cinema seat), as Nancy attempts to outwit the remorseless hunter. Altogether now: “Duuun dun duuun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun!” Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping From chart topper to chart flopper! This hilarious mockumentary traces the rise and fall of pop sensation Conner4Real (Andy Samberg), after his latest album flops and he is forced to consider returning to his boyband roots in order to maintain his extravagant lifestyle. (He does, after all, have 32 people on his payroll, including a DJ, paparazzo, bagpiper and, er, unicorn handler!) Although it lampoons the music industry without mercy, the music industry is also very much in on the joke, with Simon Cowell, Usher, Seal and DJ Khaled all appearing as themselves. If you’re X-Factor-ed out, then this is the film for you. Parents be warned, though, Never Stop is not for kids. In fact, it should probably come with one of those EXPLICIT CONTENT labels. 26 AUG The Space Between Us Taking long-distance relationships to a whole new level A 16-year-old boy who was born and raised on Mars travels to Earth to meet the Coloradobased girl he’s been talking to online in this sweet and funny sci-fi adventure. While there, the youngster – whose astronaut mother tragically died giving birth to him – also attempts 19 AUG to find out the identity of his mysterious father. Featuring a brilliant cast that includes Asa Butterfield, Gary Oldman and Britt Robertson, and a simple but stylishly told fish-out-of-water storyline, this bittersweet fantasy drama is quite literally out of this world.
