Alec Guinness accepts a BAFTA on behalf of his Ladykillers co-star
t was with obvious
delight that Alec
Guinness accepted
a BAFTA on behalf of
77-year-old actress Katie
Johnson – his co-star in the
1955 Ealing Comedy, The
Ladykillers. The film won
two awards at the ceremony,
which was held at the
ODEON on 1 March 1956,
including Best British
Actress for Johnson and
Best British Screenplay for
William Rose. Standing
alongside Guinness is an
equally thrilled Betsy Blair,
recipient of the Best Foreign
Actress gong for Marty.
Guinness, an eventual fourtime BAFTA winner, was
knighted three years later by
Her Majesty the Queen.
With awards season just around
the corner, check out this year’s
runners and riders in our
glittering feature on pages 4-8.
