Beauties and The Beast...
but this ain’t no fairy tale!
DIRECTOR M. Night Shyamalan
STARRING James McAvoy, Haley
Lu Richardson, Anya Taylor-Joy
After a lean period
(in terms of both box
office receipts and
critical reception), M. Night
Shyamalan has well and truly
rediscovered his form of late,
with his TV series Wayward
Pines (which he produces)
and the 2015 horror The Visit
dazzling and perplexing
audiences in equal measure.
Split continues this hot streak.
Arguably Shyamalan’s best
work since 2000’s Unbreakable,
this wonderfully inventive and
genuinely disturbing horror
thriller sees James McAvoy on
sensational form as the creepy
Kevin, a thirtysomething
man suffering from multiple
personality disorder. Clearly a
very troubled individual, Kevin
kidnaps three teenage girls
and locks them up in his
basement – for purposes
(initially) unknown. During
their incarceration, the young
women meet all 23 of their
captor’s personalities, some of
whom are friendly, some of
whom are not. But then a 24th
personality begins to emerge
and this one is by far the worst
of the lot... Is there a twist?
Of course – and it’s a cracker.
Welcome back M. Night!
