PROFILE
IRVINE WELSH
Born in Leith, Edinburgh
in 1957, Irvine Welsh is
one of Scotland’s most
admired novelists and
playwrights. His most
famous work remains
his first novel: 1993’s
Trainspotting. Written
in Scots, Scottish
English and British
English, it’s made up of
a series of stories about
heroin users in Leith
and was described by
Rebel Inc. as “the best
book ever written”.
dialogue, hallucinogenic
imagery, a soundtrack to die
for – this fantastic follow-up
also benefits from having all
of the original cast in place
(Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee
Miller, Robert Carlyle), and
director Danny Boyle, too.
As for the plot, well, that’s
very loosely based on Porno,
Irvine Welsh’s follow-up novel
to Trainspotting. Set 20 years
after the events of the original,
it sees the gang – Renton, Sick
Boy, Begbie and Spud – getting
involved in the porn industry
in a very unusual way.
Welsh stated in an interview
that he wasn’t interested
in doing something that
would “trash the legacy of
Trainspotting”. Rest assured,
that legacy is firmly intact.
