Brought to you from the creative team behind Despicable Me and The Secret Life of Pets ( in other words , people who really know what they ’ re doing ), this tunefully hilarious and wonderfully upbeat animated family comedy sees a koala named Buster Moon ( voiced by the brilliant Matthew McConaughey ) attempting to revive his flagging theatre business by holding a singing competition . With a substantial cash prize up for grabs , everyone and their dog decides to enter ( literally in this case ), including Reese Witherspoon ’ s Rosita ( a domestic pig ), Scarlett Johansson ’ s Ash ( a crested porcupine ) and Seth MacFarlane ’ s Mike ( a white lab mouse with a booming Frank Sinatra-style voice ).
Just like the real X-Factor , they all have fascinating back stories . Rosita , for instance , gave up her childhood dreams of being a singer to raise 25 piglets with her husband Norman , while gorilla Johnny ( Taron Egerton ) is trying to escape the family business ( his dad is a criminal ).
