Melissa McCarthy’s divorcee goes back
to college in this laugh-out-loud comedy Saoirse Ronan plays a 1960s newlywed
struggling with her matrimonial duties
DIRECTOR Ben Falcone
starring Melissa McCarthy, Julie Bowen, Debby Ryan DIRECTOR Dominic Cooke
starring Saoirse Ronan, Emily Watson, Billy Howle
Written and directed by her hubby
Ben Falcone, this feel-good comedy
stars Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy
as Deanna, a recently dumped mum who decides
to turn “regret into reset” and finally get the
education she walked away from. As fate would
have it, Deanna winds up in the same class
as her daughter, who’s not overly keen on this
development. Until, that is, her mother –
following a rejuvenating makeover – proves
herself to be the life of the party and becomes
one of the most popular ‘kids’ on campus.
Hilarious but also surprisingly heartfelt, this
is McCarthy at her crowd-pleasing best. Based on Ian McEwan’s brilliant
2007 novella (which was short-listed
for the much-coveted Booker Prize),
this thoughtful 1960s-set period drama sees
Saoirse Ronan (a 2018 Best Actress Oscar
nominee for Lady Bird) and Billy Howle
(Dunkirk) falling in love and getting married.
But their honeymoon on Chesil Beach in Dorset
proves a difficult one, with both characters
preoccupied – and in Ronan’s case terrified
– by the physical intimacy that’s expected.
A riveting study of societal pressure and
its negative effects, with mesmerising
performances from the two young leads.
