La La Land
Damien Chazelle’s LA-based musical is a film to fall in love with.
You’ll sing! You’ll dance! You’ll laugh! You’ll cry!
In Ryan Gosling
(Drive) and Emma
Stone (The Help)
La La Land has two actors at
the very top of their game,
and this talented duo is on
song and in tune – literally
– for this life-affirming
musical comedy drama, that
harks back to Hollywood’s
Golden Age.
Set in modern-day Los
Angeles (the City of Angels
for some, the city of broken
dreams for others), the
film is directed by Damien
Chazelle (the creative
mastermind behind the
devastatingly effective
Whiplash) and sees jazz
pianist Sebastian (Gosling)
falling for aspiring actress
Mia (Stone). Seb dreams of

running his own nightclub,
while Mia wants to put on
her own plays. Pretty soon
their developing careers are
threatening to put a strain on
their once solid relationship.
With foot-stomping
musical numbers – in one
incredible sequence Gosling
and Stone literally dance
on air – and a terrific
supporting cast that includes
J.K. Simmons (who won
an Oscar for his terrifying
turn in Chazelle’s Whiplash)
and Rosemarie DeWitt
(Rachel Getting Married),
La La Land can’t fail to
sing and dance its way into
your heart. Oscars? Don’t
be surprised if this takes
home the lot. An undeniably
magical film!
