Watch the trailer Patriots Day Denial A gripping retelling of the Boston Marathon bombing A US historian must prove the Holocaust took place Brought to you by Peter Berg, the JAN director of Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day recalls the true events that took place on 15 April 2013, when two pressure cooker bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring another 265. The all-star cast includes Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) as Sergeant Tommy Saunders, Kevin Bacon (Apollo 13) as FBI special agent Richard DesLauriers and John Goodman (The Monuments Men) as Commissioner Ed Davis – three men who played pivotal roles both that fateful day and during the subsequent manhunt for the terrorists responsible. There were concerns before the release of Deepwater Horizon that it was too soon after the tragedy to be making a film, but the production turned out to be a respectable, thrilling affair that honoured rather than exploited those who had lost their lives. Expect Patriots Day to be just as heroic and meaningful. Adapted from the book History on JAN Trial: My Day in Court With a Holocaust Denier, this enthralling true story sees American historian Deborah Lipstadt (played by the ever-wonderful Rachel Weisz – accent-and-all) being sued for libel by English author and well-known Holocaust denier David Irving (a brilliant Timothy Spall) after she named and shamed him as a falsifier of history in her book Denying the Holocaust. Incredibly, as the burden of proof is on the accused in British courts, Lipstadt must essentially prove this mass World War Two slaughter took place. Boasting exceptional performances from Weisz (The Mercy) and Spall (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), as well as fantastic supporting turns from Tom Wilkinson (Batman Begins), Andrew Scott (Spectre) and Mark Gatiss (TV’s Sherlock), Denial is further proof that the most gripping narratives are almost always true. Even if you know the outcome, don’t miss this one. It’s truly compelling! 27 27 TRAILER BREAKDOWN The Bye Bye Man 0.11 “You hear the stories every day – violent crimes, countless victims, unthinkable acts!” 0.26 “You wonder what could possess a person to do such terrible things.” 0.33 “But it’s not a matter of what made them do it…” 0.40 “…it’s a matter of who!” The Bye Bye Man is in cinemas from 13 January • Tom Holland will make his debut as the Webbed Wonder in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
