Bubble The K-Tron These ruthless combat androids (i.e. killing machines) protect Alpha’s Council of Elders. A popular character from the comic-book, Melo can replicate any small object through, erm, pooping. Operating in threes (they make no sense if they’re not a trio), these clever aliens speak 1,200 languages. as anyone who’s seen the mind-blowing trailers will confirm, it’s money well spent. The movie not only creates a far-future cosmos so realistic you’ll think you’re there (especially if you watch it in 3D), but also more than 200 alien species. When we said ‘Wow!’ we meant it! Melo the Converter The Doghan Daguis (Rihanna) The R&B legend plays a dancing shapeshifter. And she’s “phenomenal” according to Cara Delevingne. 28th Century Boy (And Girl) In the role of Valerian is The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Dane DeHaan, with Britain’s Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad) playing Laureline. As special operatives working in the 28th century, it’s their job to maintain order in the human territories, including the vast metropolis of Alpha, which is home to species from 1,000 different planets. However, as the trailer’s sultry voiceover reveals: “After centuries of peace, an unknown force wants to destroy all we have created...” (The meanies!) Under orders from the Ministry of Defence, Valerian and Laureline have less than 10 hours to find the threat... and eliminate it. “[They’ll] be completely blown away visually [and] emotionally,” declared Delevingne when asked how she thought audiences would react to the film. “Every particle of their body will be blown away. That’s not a promise, that’s a fact!” With superb supporting work from such big-names stars as Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Rutger Hauer, Clive Owen and Rihanna (see above to find out who the latter’s playing), Valerian is quite simply out of this world. Welcome to the future. It’s fantastic! Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets crash-lands in cinemas on Thursday 3 August
