Bridget Jones’s Baby TBC Released 16 September Director Sharon Maguire Starring Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey Well, there’s Bridget, but where’s the baby? Watch the trailer 24 JUN Fifteen years after the v. good original and 12 years after the almost-as-v.-good sequel, Bridget Jones is back. And guess what? She’s only blooming single again! Based on the newspaper columns author Helen Fielding wrote for The Independent in 2005, rather than her third, somewhat controversial* Bridget Jones novel Mad About the Boy, Bridget Jones’s Baby sees our favourite “wanton sex 16 SEPT goddess” – now 43 years of age – embracing the single life once again after breaking up with her long-term squeeze Mark Darcy (Colin Firth – The King’s Speech). Despite the split, our klutzy heroine is feeling upbeat. She’s got an exciting new job as producer of a news programme, is getting on well with her ex (well, kind of anyway) and there’s a new man on the scene in the form of hunky Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey – Grey’s Anatomy’s McDreamy). In true Bridget fashion, however, life is about to take a turn for the topsy-turvy. As it turns out, she’s up the duff. To make matters worse, she doesn’t know who the father is. There’s a 50 per cent chance it’s Mark, and a 2/1 chance it’s Jack. As Emma Thompson’s hilarious baby doctor puts it: “It’s like the final of The X-Factor. Dial 01 if you want it to be Mark and 02 if you want it to be Jack...” Once again starring Renée Zellweger (who really does have the posh British accent down to a tee) as Bridget, with fantastic support from Firth and Dempsey, this third instalment is a bit like having a baby: a long time in production, but so very worth the wait. You’ll have to read Mad About the Boy to find out why it caused uproar, we’re giving nothing away! * odeon.co.uk 5
