now more than ever,
this absorbing biographical
drama takes us back in time
to the reign of another
polarising president, George
W. Bush, or more specifically
his equally divisive vice
president, Dick Cheney.
Featuring an astonishing
turn from Christian Bale as
Cheney, with sterling support
from Sam Rockwell as Bush
and Amy Adams as Lynne
Cheney (Dick’s wife), Vice
explores how this Washington
bureaucrat became arguably
the most powerful man in the
world, carving out legislation
and influencing global affairs
in a way that is still felt today.
Those in the know started
talking about awards as soon
as the first trailer for Vice was
released, and the film really
is a tour-de-force from all
involved, including director
Adam McKay, who may add
another Oscar ® to the Best
Adapted Screenplay gong he
won in 2016. But it’s Bale
you’ll be talking about long
after the credits role – as
the Vice of the title, he gives
a performance for the ages.

productions, including 23
full-length feature films.
In the twilight years of
their career, they embarked
on a gruelling tour of Britain
and it’s this section of their
extraordinary lives that this
earnest comedy drama from
Filth director Jon S. Baird
chooses to concentrate on.
Featuring affecting turns
from Steve Coogan and John
C. Reilly as Stan and Ollie
respectively, this is a moving
portrait of the iconic duo.
messy origins
Laurel and Hardy’s most famous
catchphrase: “Well, here’s another
nice mess you’ve gotten me into,”
was first used by Hardy in the 1930
film The Laurel-Hardy Murder Case.
It is often misquoted in popular
culture as “another fine mess”. Other
well-known sayings coined by the
beloved duo include, “Why don’t you
do something to help me?” and “Why
don’t you keep your big mouth shut?”
