Eighteen years after Jim Carrey’s spin
on the cave-dwelling, Christmas-
wrecking grouch, The Grinch is back
with a 3D animated makeover, courtesy of
Illumination, the team behind the inspired
Despicable Me and Sing.
The plot stays true to Dr. Seuss’ classic 1957
storybook, with the gentle, kindly residents of
Whoville planning an epic Christmas party,
while the green meanie on the mountainside
cooks up a plot to sabotage the festivities by
disguising himself as Santa Claus. And he
might well get away with it, too, if not for the
little girl who’s desperate to meet him…
With respect to Mr Carrey, this might just
be the freshest, fastest and funniest Grinch so
far. Benedict Cumberbatch is ace in the title
role, the Academy Award-nominated star of
Sherlock, Doctor Strange and The Imitation
Game perfectly nailing the Grinch’s sneer,
snark, and, just maybe, growing heart.
Few can match Illumination for madcap
humour, and the laughs come thick and fast as
the Grinch takes on the townsfolk, struggling
to control both his pet dog, Max, and his own
bodily functions. You’ll love him and hate him.
You’ll cheer him and hiss him. But when you
catch The Grinch this festive season, you’ll
agree that being bad has never felt so good.
