ased loosely on the 1980s British miniseries, Widows is
a heist movie with a difference. It’s hugely entertaining,
as the genre dictates, but it’s also not afraid to tackle big
issues such as race, class and gender. It should come as no
surprise then that the director is Steve McQueen, the man behind the
sensational 12 Years a Slave. Teaming with Gillian Flynn (writer of
Gone Girl and the recent TV darling Sharp Objects), the talented
Londoner has crafted a blockbuster with conviction, fuelled by searing
performances from his all-star cast. Here, we meet a group of women
for whom losing their partners is just the beginning of their woes.
