Back in 2011, when Jason Momoa hit
the radar as berserker warlord Khal
Drogo in Game of Thrones, we all had
the same thought: “Give that man a movie!”
Well, DC Comics did, and now, as Aquaman,
the star repays their faith with a performance
so intense he even manages to smoulder
underwater. Momoa plays Arthur Curry (aka
Aquaman): heir to the aquatic kingdom of
Atlantis, and blessed with the abilities to
breathe underwater and shoot the breeze with
sea creatures. Less fortunately, he’s also the
long-suffering half-brother to Orm (Patrick
Wilson): a supervillain whose plot to seize the
throne for himself and conquer the surface
world has led director James Wan to describe
this much-anticipated movie as “a classic
Shakespearean story of sibling rivalry”.
Unlike Shakespeare, though, Aquaman serves
up some of the best edge-of-the-seat action
you’ll see this year, as Wan (whose previous work
includes Furious 7) pulls out the stops with tidal
waves, sub battles, shark armies and rampaging
seahorses. But even with all those weird and
wonderful beasts, there’s no upstaging a solid-
gold cast that includes Amber Heard as
Aquaman’s feisty love-interest Mera and Nicole
Kidman as his mother Queen Atlanna. Dive in.
