October/November 2023 TAL Spotlight On the 23 Sections | Page 23

Each of the Section ’ s monthly breakfast meetings highlights one of the sponsors and features a speaker on topics of interest to the members . At the Section ’ s September breakfast , lawyers from Georgia Heirs Property Law Center offered tips on how to structure estate plans to avoid the creation of fractured or tangled title , which has resulted in billions of dollars of lost equity in Georgia to date .
All of this great work has earned this Section the Atlanta Bar ’ s “ Section of the Year ” award for the last four years , as well as the 2023 Community Partner Award from DeKalb Pro Bono ( formerly DeKalb Volunteer Lawyers Foundation ).
The Section also collaborates with other Sections to present informative seminars ; last fall the Section worked with the Family Law Section to present a panel discussion on Divorce and Trusts .
The Section actively supports , both financially and with volunteer services , several pro bono organizations including the Atlanta Bar Foundation , AVLF , DeKalb Pro Bono , Georgia Heirs Property Law Center and Pro Bono Partnership . Additionally , Section members routinely staff the legal clinics at the Fulton and DeKalb probate courts , and serve as guardians ad litem in probate courts throughout metro Atlanta . In November , Section members will participate in a Fulton County wills clinic serving over 100 Southwest Atlanta residents .
