Junior fair board fills an important role

By Jen Jones
Even without the traditional fair this year , the junior fair board was busy during the animal showcases .
“ My dad is on the senior fair board , and I ’ ve always been involved with the fair . My friends talked about the junior fair board , and it sounded like something I ’ d like so I could help with the fair ,” said Luke Massie , president of the junior fair board .
Massie said the junior fair board is a great way to get more involved with the fair . “ You see the behind-the-scenes stuff that most people don ’ t see . It ’ s a great way to learn
leadership skills . We help with all of the shows and learn how shows are run differently . I show hogs but usually help with the dairy show . I get a different perspective of the shows .”
When asked about how the fair was different this year , Massie said , “ The shows were fairly similar . We can ’ t hand out awards but have to point to where they are and make sure each person gets the right award . Only one person can be in the announcer ’ s booth when there is usually a couple — one announcing and one recording . Unfortunately , there wasn ’ t any showmanship classes this

Conner Webster is in his third year of being on the junior fair board .
“ I saw all of the opportunities it offered . I ’ m a people person , and this was a great way to meet more people . I enjoy working the shows and helping spread knowledge of the fair . Watching the kids grow year after year makes me happy , and I like helping the young kids . So many people have no idea what happens behind the scenes at the fair , and it ’ s fun to have that backstage info and see all that goes on . Everything with 4-H brings a new perspective , and I never look at things the same way ,” Webster said .
The junior fair board helped with the animal showcases Saturday through Tuesday , Oct . 3-6 and on Saturday , Oct . 10 .
