The Veterinary Technician by Cheyenne Pratt, Technician, Calico Creek Veterinary Clinic
When you visit the veterinarian with your pet, a veterinary technician is often one of the first staff members you will interact with. Vet techs are responsible for many duties at vet clinics and hospitals, so they play a crucial part in your pet’ s health. They are a compassionate group of people with a love for all animals. Veterinary technicians are the nurses of the animal world, working alongside veterinarians to provide care and medical support for their patients. When it comes to animal medicine, veterinary technicians can pretty much do everything but diagnose diseases, prescribe medication, or perform surgery. A vet tech’ s duties include( but are not limited to):
• Client communication and education
• Taking vitals
• Restraining animals
• Taking x-rays
• Administering vaccines and medications
• Collecting blood, urine, and fecal samples
• Running various diagnostic tests
• Preparing animals for surgery
• Administering and monitoring anesthesia
• Cleaning / maintaining lab and surgical equipment
• Nursing care
• Performing routine dental cleanings
• Nail trims
• Answering phones / scheduling appointments
• Cleaning the clinic
Being a veterinary technician isn’ t always about the cute puppies and kittens; it is a career that is both physically and emotionally demanding. It’ s dealing with sick, injured, and aggressive animals. It’ s delicately handling grieving or angry pet owners. It’ s working long hours standing, with minimal breaks. It’ s death. It’ s bites, scratches, and getting covered in bodily fluids. It’ s lifting heavy animals and restraining uncooperative ones. Being a vet tech is definitely not easy, but if you ask most of them, they would say they can’ t imagine doing anything else. It is rewarding helping animals and making a difference in their lives, in one way or another.
In October, 1993, The North American Veterinary Technician Association( NAVTA) declared the third week in October National Veterinary Technician Week. This is a week to honor vet techs for their hard work and dedication to veterinary medicine.
