Photographer James Jones documented the REGENT headquarters and manufacturing site in Quonset, where Seagliders will be made. He was amazed that what is happening in Rhode Island could have a global impact.“ Quietly( perhaps a bit too quietly) there is real science and technology innovation happening on both sides of the bay,” he says.“ I don’ t know why it isn’ t better known as a hub. As a lifelong aviation and science enthusiast, I only hope that companies like this will stick around and gather their friends. It felt like a place where engineering and exploration co-exist.”
Photographer Dee Speaks captured portraits of this year’ s Bannister Award winners. She values the opportunity each year to meet new people and connect with them through her photography.“ Many people admit to feeling a bit uncomfortable in front of the camera, so I make it a priority to create a relaxed, welcoming environment so the portraits reflect genuine moments,” she says.“ Everyone was gracious and easy to work with, and to my surprise, one of the recipients knew many people in my family. Hearing stories of those connections and how far back they went added a meaningful, personal dimension to the assignment.”
Erin Malinn is currently studying at the University of Rhode Island, where she works as a writing intern for the College of Arts and Sciences’ Social Media Agency. While she was a summer intern at Rhode Island Monthly, she immediately connected with the executive director of The Womxn Project, Jocelyn Foye, whom she profiled for this year’ s Bannister Awards.“ My favorite aspect of journalism is being able to give people a platform to share their stories and their passions,” she says.“ Talking to someone who feels this same passion for their work inspires me in my own career.”
