Black Cat Awareness Month
by Cheyenne Pratt, Technician, Calico Creek Veterinary Clinic
October is Black Cat Awareness Month! All cats have unique personalities, but black cats are usually playful, affectionate, and highly intelligent, making them great companions. Black is the most common color for cats and many different breeds can have black coats but not all of them. It’ s rare for a cat to be completely black, as most have small patches of white fur or white whiskers.
Due to old folklore, black cats have been associated with evil or bad luck for centuries. Sadly, black cat superstition still exists and black cats often get overlooked in shelters and are more likely to be euthanized. On the contrary, black cats were a symbol of good luck in ancient Egypt, Japan, and Italy. Decades ago, cats were commonly used on ships for rodent control and British sailors believed black cats brought their ships good luck and a safe return.
In addition to Black Cat Awareness Month, there are two days dedicated specifically to black cats: August 17th is Black Cat Appreciation Day and October 27th is National Black Cat Day. Black Cat Awareness Month brings special attention to black cats, with the goal of breaking the superstition surrounding them. It gives shelters a chance to advocate for their adoption and welfare by finding loving homes for black cats in need.
If you would like to get involved in Black Cat Awareness Month, you could help by:
* Supporting your local shelter by volunteering your time or donating
* Offering to host a black cat adoption event at a shelter
* Adopting a black cat if you are considering adopting a kitty
* Spreading awareness and positivity about black cats
Black cats are loyal, sleek and beautiful and anybody would be lucky to share their heart and home with one … or more.:)
