Sugar Valley Rural Charter School’ s Special Education Department has developed a new course for students in Learning Support and Life Skills courses. The course is called Social Skills / Daily Living Skills, taught by Mrs. Crawford, and it ' s designed to teach students how to use manners, express feelings, and act as a responsible, kind, and helpful adult. The class will teach the students how to confidently initiate conversations with others and how to respond to others in different circumstances. The course is designed to be a self-esteem builder while treating yourself and others in positive manners. Students will learn how to execute everyday activities, such as shopping, budgeting, eating in restaurants, cooking, and so much more.
The class has begun a Staff Coffee Cart for the beginning of the school year. Twice a month, during the block class period, the students will be taking orders and delivering coffee, tea, or hot cocoa and a treat for $ 1.50. Any proceeds made from the Coffee Cart will be used to purchase supplies for the cart that the students will budget for. They even created a loyalty punch card for staff to earn a free beverage. The class will organize the orders, then deliver them to staff throughout the school.
Mrs. Crawford is doing an amazing job with the class as their first day of delivery, where each student had a participation role in the Coffee Cart. It was a complete success! Staff look forward to the little pick-me-up on the day when the cart is available and seeing the pride and excitement the students have while playing their role. All of SVRCS couldn’ t be more excited to see this class excel in their project.
SVRCS FFA Wins at Big E!
When SVRCS entered the Environmental and Natural Resources category in the local and state FFA competitions, they had no idea where it would take them. In this case, after qualifying at the state level, they went to the Big E( Eastern States in Springfield, MA), where they earned a first place title in the ENR Career and Leadership Development Events.
The ENR team includes Marrin Clester, Evie Andrus, Carson Sanders, and Kohana Yamashita, all juniors at SVRCS. They were tested on their knowledge of addressing environmental and natural resource issues of protecting air, soil, and water as a team, with individual tests as well, where Kohana Yamashita earned an 8th place national award.
SVRCS is proud of their FFA teams and their knowledge of the agricultural environment we live in. Having these students be our future
is very exciting to know that our lands will be taken care of. www. bearcountrygoodnews. com“ Good News”-- October-- 5
