A Note From The Editor :
Sometimes , a sweet story can really raise your spirits . This one sure made me smile . And it ' s an idea worthy of stealing ! It took place in Michigan last summer , where a stray dog named Scout took matters into his own paws in deciding his destiny . Scout managed to escape from the Antrim County Animal Shelter by scaling a ten foot chain link gate and six foot solid privacy fence . He then crossed a busy highway , and slipped , unnoticed , inside the Meadow Brook Medical Care Nursing Home . A nurse found Scout curled up on the couch the next morning , and contacted an animal warden , who returned him to the shelter down the road . A few nights later , Scout staged another great escape and wound up back on the couch in the nursing home . Again , Scout was returned to the shelter . When it happened a third time , Meadow Brook ' s administrator , Marna Robertson , had a change of heart . She considered it a sign that Scout was meant to be there . The facility is a long-term medical care residence that houses dementia patients , terminally ill , and elderly without family . Robertson said having a dog around makes it feel more like home for the residents , and the staff loves it , too . So Scout , at last , was formally adopted . He had been a stray for awhile , and nothing was known about his background , except for obvious signs that he was abused . He had even been shot with BB ' s or birdshot at one time , but somehow still manages to love people . Nursing home staffers say Scout is very good at his job . He has free rein at the facility , and visits all the residents in their rooms , but is especially solicitous with those that are ill . He ' s known to not leave their side when they are experiencing a crisis . Nurses recently named Scout " Resident of the Month ," and held a fundraiser in his honor , posting his photo on social media and raising donations for the animal shelter that temporarily housed him . Everyone is delighted that Scout found his real home at Meadow Brook , especially its residents . As nursing coordinator Jenni Martinek says , " To each and every one of them , Scout is their dog !"
