There have been a number of events in the news as of late about problems with Emotional Support Animals on airplanes , or people faking a Service Dog or Emotional Support Animal to get special privileges . I would like to try to explain the different roles these dogs play and why it is so very important to take these dogs and their owners ' needs seriously , so that they can perform the duties they are trained to do .
Service dogs go through rigorous training to perform specific tasks to mitigate a disability . They are trained to have exemplary obedience so that they can have access to public spaces without causing a disruption . These dogs are prescribed by a doctor and are protected by the Americans With Disability Act . The only animals permitted as Service Animals are dogs , or in some limited cases , miniature horses . Not just any dog is capable of this job . Of the dogs that are specifically bred for this job , only about 50 % of them train to successfully be certified . The process normally takes 2 years of intensive training . Please be respectful of the special dogs they are . Pretending to have or need a service dog only hurts the reputation and acceptance of valid service dogs and the disabled persons who truly need those dogs to assist them .
Emotional Support Animals are provided to individuals with a specific mental health disability . Many different types of animals are eligible for this service , to provide companionship and emotional support to their disabled owners . They are protected by housing laws and can live with their owners in housing that is otherwise pet-free . They are also permitted on airplanes with their owners as long as they are under control . They have NO public access rights . There are few exceptions to the owner ' s right to have an Emotional Support Animal in their home , however , landlords do have some protection . The animal cannot pose a “ direct threat ” to the health or safety of the other tenants . The owner is exempt if they have fewer than 4 units and live in one of them or a single family home that is not rented through a real estate agent and the owner owns fewer than 3 properties . Housing through a club or organization that only rents to members is exempt . Sadly , it has become very easy for people to fake the need for an Emotional Support Animal through online resources . This has made landlords suspicious of those who need this support , creating a negative climate for legitimate animals and their owners .
It amazes me when animals work so hard to make the life of their person easier or safer . They deserve to be respected and honored for their service . Please don ’ t allow these dogs or their owners to be disrespected or invalidated by selfishly misrepresenting your pet as a working dog .
