HONORING MAX ENGLE
570.398.1561 • www . jsasd . org
The Jersey Shore School District is mourning the loss of student athlete Max Engle September 15th , a week after he collapsed during the third football game of the year against Selinsgrove . Max was a senior this year , and a starting defensive end for the Bulldogs , who drew praise for his leadership , both on and off the field .
The entire Jersey Shore community was immediately galvanized into action , as a Go Fund Me campaign started receiving contributions as soon as it was posted online , and well exceeded its goal . Several fundraising events were held throughout September , including concerts at the Jersey Shore Elks Club and The Gamble Farm Inn , and a benefit and official memorial took place at the Bald Birds Brewing Company in Jersey Shore . Proceeds are also being shared with fellow classmate , Caleb Latimer , who is battling leukemia .
Over 34 school districts across the state wore orange the next Thursday after the game , the fourth day of the week , to honor Max , whose jersey sported the number 4 . Dozens of photos were posted on social media to portray the community ' s solidarity and support .
The next football game was pushed back several days after Max passed , and when the Bulldogs did take the field against Shikellamy , they were playing for their fallen teammate , a 17 year old who had already touched and influenced many lives at his young age . Max was a leader , one of those people , his friends and teammates say , who made those around him better .
Thousands of people , many who never even had the opportunity to meet him , have been affected and changed by the loss of Max Engle . Head Football Coach Tom Gravish told his players , " If there is a way through this , I believe it is together ..." Here ' s hoping we can all channel our pain and grief to emulate Max ' s ability to be a good friend and lift those around us .
A Basket Raffle for Caleb is being held at Ace ' s Closet on Friday , October 6th , from 5 - 8pm , and Saturday , October 7th , 10am - 2pm . All contributions can be dropped off during business hours at the shop , located at 1309 Mackeyville Road in Mill Hall . For more information , please text Ace ' s Closet at 570-660-9345 .
Thanks to everyone for their generosity throughout these difficult times .
