September 2022 ASCE-Region 1 Assembly ( In-Person / Virtual Hybrid )
The 2022 ASCE-Region 1 Assembly was held in September this year at the Strathallan Hotel in Rochester , NY and was a hybrid model in terms of attendance with members joining in-person and others virtually . This hybrid model seems to drive up attendance , as there are many individuals who might not be able to make the trip , but would still like to be involved in the discussions .
The assembly was facilitated by John Folts ( ASCE Region 1 Director ) who did an excellent job and ensured that each topic of discussion was addressed without derailing the scheduled agenda .
Presentations this year included an overview of “ Engineering Abroad in New Zealand ” by Katie Dugan , a quick review / update of current happenings at RIT from the local student chapter ( advisors needed for their concrete canoe team ), a discussion surrounding “ MOSAIC ” by Lisa Black , and a PDH presentation on the “ Charles Carroll Plaza & Sister Cities Bridge Revitalization ” by Herb Guenther and James Krapf .
Updates were provided by the NYS Council and discussions took place regarding the assignment of various Canadian Universities to existing US ASCE section / chapters based on geographic location , but nothing has been finalized yet . A common theme of conversation throughout the assembly was how to get existing members to be more involved , how to attract new members , and how to build out a direct pipeline to potentially lead our younger members into positions on the board of directors in the future .
Following the completion of the formal agenda , Andy Wojewodzic ( of the City of Rochester , NY ) gave a tour of the Charles Carroll Plaza that Herb Guenther and James Krapf had previously given the PDH presentation on . The next meeting is currently scheduled for 3 / 31 / 23 to 4 / 1 / 23 at Rowan University in Glassboro , NJ .
A big thank you to ASCE-Region 1 and all of the fantastic people involved in the organization for fostering an environment focused on the betterment of the industry as a whole .
