All public facilities of the building are fed off Maude Street by means of an expansive triple volume colonnade with vast glazing opening into the retail spaces . The colonnade provides a covered threshold and pulls people through the space at street level . The reception areas as well as conference facilities are located on the upper floor above the entrance level which are accessed by lift , stair or escalator .
The tower , rising above the basement and podium , consists of offices , apartments , a hotel and reception , penthouses and the 3,000m ² Leonardo suite spread over 3 floors .
Design Philosophy Francois Pienaar , the lead design architect , completed his Masters ’ degree under Louis Kahn at the University of Pennsylvania . Much of Francois ’ work and the eventual language and influence of the Leonardo , echoed that of Louis Kahn ’ s philosophies and making of his buildings . The Leonardo , like Louis Kahn ’ s buildings , explores geometrical order , space and light . The building has a formal response and approach to geometry . The finishes in the building were the ‘ outer expression of structural ideas ’, a concept which was influenced by Louis Kahn ’ s work .
