OGGIE OUTDOOR LAUNCHES THERMOWOOD CLADDING
Oggie recently launched an exciting new product in their outdoor range . Thermo-treated wood is a versatile material for exterior and interior applications in all climates . The thermal modification process uses only heat and steam to change each plank fibre all the way to the wood core . Each plank is heated to 150 ° C for 20 hours so that the natural sugars / nutrients are broken down and the moisture content of the wood is reduced to 0 %. The heat is then raised to 215 ° C and held for 4 hours . This is where the cellular structure is altered to darken and toughen the wood , achieving a low moisture content and dimensional stability . Thermo treated planks are energy efficient , durable , low maintenance and decay resistant .

UNIQUELY STRIKING RAMMED EARTH TECHNIQUE USED IN COMMERCIAL BUILDING
Rammed Earth SA recently completed work on the Saldanha Bay IDZ project designed by Osmond Lange Architects . As far as is known , this is the largest commercial rammed earth construction project undertaken in South Africa .
The building was a concrete structure with Rammed Earth filling between concrete columns , resulting in beautifully coloured walls of various earth toned hues with openings for windows and doors . These walls were rammed 400mm thick and 4.8m high . The front of the building façade was very challenging as it needed two 47m curved walls with openings for windows and doors .
There are many advantages of using the Rammed Earth technique . It has superior thermal mass . The thickness and density of the material means that heat and cold penetration of the walls is very slow and the internal temperature of the building remains stable . Noise transmission is very much reduced - particularly useful to keep out noise close to high density traffic or walls inbetween townhouses .
Rammed Earth is extremely strong and durable - regular density tests average an mpa of more than 20 . Rammed Earth walls are extremely low maintenance ; they don ’ t require finishing with plasterboard or render , no painting is ever required but if need be these walls can be treated in the same manner as masonry walls . A water based silicone water repellent is advisable .
The fireproof qualities of these walls are outstanding ; a 250mm earth wall achieved a 4 hour fire resistant rating . ( bulletin 5 : earth wall construction 5th edition ). Rammed Earth walls are load bearing , usually in excess of structural requirements necessary . These walls are extremely versatile and can be used in commercial and domestic buildings . Elements such as art work , patterns , alcoves and doors can be incorporated . The density and lack of cavities within the Rammed Earth walls make them extremely pest proof .
