Witches on Water
In celebration of the spooky season, witches, goblins and ghouls took over Wickford Harbor last Halloween, making their way around the water on paddleboards.
The annual event was open to experienced paddlers, who were encouraged to dress in creepy costumes. The brigade began at Gardner’s Wharf at
the end of Main Street in Wickford with a great view for shoppers and locals to watch their favorite wicked creatures cruise through the harbor. Due to this
year’s COVID-19 restrictions, the Witches of Wickford paddle has not yet been confirmed. However, for those interested in learning to paddleboard, there
are many Rhode Island-based learning resources: The Kayak Centre in North Kingstown offers a variety of paddleboard and kayaking classes as well as
daily paddleboard and kayak rentals through the fall by reservation only. Paddle Surf RI in Westerly also offers rentals, encouraging locals to “walk on water”
with private and semi-private lessons offered every day of the week. These lessons are fun for the whole family and a great way to explore the Rhode Island
coast in socially distant fashion. Costumes are optional, but always entertaining. Go to facebook.com/kayakri to find out if there will be a Witches of
Wickford Paddle event this year. —THERESA BROWN
