Fueled by a need
for creativity, he jumped on the opportunity
to photograph the abandoned Bells
stables in Newport. “It’s just incredible
how nature reclaims everything. Trees
were literally growing into and over the
entire building,” he says. “When you view
the stables from the sky, it looks as if it’s
been sitting there for centuries with the
amount of foliage — a cool little glimpse
into the past.”

Tips of the Trade
Local home industry professionals
share simple ways you can spruce up
your home this fall.
Stadium-grade
fog machines,
actors in
spine-chilling
handcrafted
masks and
makeup, and
horror sets that
take half a year or more to prepare and
construct: These are the things one
expects to experience on the set of a
blockbuster horror movie in Hollywood,
says Wolf Matthewson [“Halloween
Haunts”]. “But for me, it was just one
night of driving through the suburbs of
Rhode Island while stopping to photograph
some of the most amazing
Halloween displays I’ve ever seen.”

made for a pleasant change, he says. “It
was an honor to meet these individuals
and to get a sneak peek into their lives
and where they live,” he says. “As a
visitor and an outsider with a camera,
not everyone is as welcoming as you
would hope...but the subjects here were
absolutely lovely and couldn’t have been
nicer to work with.”
