ON SECOND THOUGHT, MAYBE THAT WASN’T BOB CARROLL and Scott Knoll’s best idea when they assembled last year’s Halloween display on their front lawn. The design, including twenty costumed clowns caught in murderous mayhem, was a winner for scream queens. But for the little ones, not so much. “We found out people hate clowns,” says Carroll with a laugh. “These little kids would show up, and as soon as they saw those clowns, that was it.” Everyone loves the more whimsical walk-through Halloween maze, however, which is constructed by Knoll with animatronic monsters, zombies, a live scarecrow and more. They collect most of the items and costumes featured in the display from years of dumpster-diving behind costume stores like Spirit Halloween and by browsing for free items on Craigslist. “Any place that sells Halloween stuff will throw out costumes and masks, because if there is a slight tear, they think it’s no good,” Carroll says. | | CONTINUED ON PAGE 118
