DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT and New Delhi; Fuel, Mumbai; Ensemble, Mumbai and New Delhi; OGAAN, New Delhi and Hyderabad, VESIMI, Dubai; and Aashni & Co., London. Her collections are also available online via Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop as well as Aashni & Co. Arpita’s collections have been appreciated by professional women, fashion insiders, and celebrities, and she is grateful for their acknowledgement of her label. Her garments have been worn by prominent Bollywood actresses and she appreciates the role they play in promoting a designer’s work. “Sonam Kapoor is a known fashionista and is admired for her style sensibilities and ensembles. She was the first actor to have mentioned the designer whose garment she was wearing. This sparked a trend as other celebrities followed suit and began giving credit to the designers. Given the influence Bollywood stars have on the masses—both online and offline—this exercise has greatly helped the designers in getting their work recognised.” TRENDS: IMPORTANT YET NOT ALL-ENCOMPASSING Arpita majorly crafts collections for two seasons— Spring Summer and Autumn Winter, and also creates two capsule collections each year. The collections are designed keeping in mind prevailing trends, different body types, and occasions the garments are to be worn at. “WHILE TRENDS ARE IMPORTANT, THEY SHOULD NOT BE FOLLOWED BLINDLY, AS DIFFERENT GARMENTS SUIT DIFFERENT PEOPLE.” “Colour plays an important role in creating looks for my garments. I feel that the right colour combination of motifs and patterns helps in achieving the desired look. Over time, I have moved from a colour palette of bright colours to a combination of bright and pastel colours. While working on the Neocap collection, I made it a point to balance the shades well as solely neon colours would have been jarring to the eye.” Arpita’s most recent collection, titled ‘TrenTradition’ is a fusion of the trendy and the traditional, and falls in line with her design ideology—fun, bold, and easy to wear. “While trends are important, they should not be followed blindly, as different garments suit different people. Fashion is an amalgam of the prevailing trends and the wearer’s personality and body type. I believe that the purpose of a designer garment is to enhance the look of the wearer.”
