DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT
OF DAUNTLESS DESIGNS
Apparel speaks to Arpita Mehta to capture on paper the essence of her design ideology, her
eye-catching collections, and her journey so far.
“Fashion is a form of self-expression,” says Mumbai-based
designer Arpita Mehta, who designs contemporary Indian garments
that bring together the verve of mirror-work embroidery, the tactility
of hand-stitching and sewing, and contemporary prints and
patterns that carry an altogether distinct look and identity. Drawn to
the sparkle, motifs, and stitches of traditional Gujarati mirror-work,
Arpita Mehta started her career in the fashion industry a decade
ago “by designing garments using mirror-work in unique styles
that struck the perfect amalgamation of elegance and comfort for
the wearer.”
THE CALL OF FASHION
The beginning of Arpita’s journey in designing goes back to her
schooling days. Though she enjoyed poring over fashion magazines
and putting together interesting looks, she never imagined carving a
career out of fashion. Instead, she took up courses in aeronautical
engineering and medicine. While having easily cleared those
entrance exams, she decided to take a chance and enrolled in the
three-year Apparel Manufacture and Design course from SNDT
University, Mumbai. Having topped the entrance exam, she decided
to pursue her passion for designing garments.
