Multiple Cases: Leads to Citations and Seizures

A Senior Trooper from the Bend office responded to a report of a subject who shot a deer on private property in

the Maury unit. While talking to both the landowner agent and the suspect on the phone, both agreed the subject

would bring the animal to the Bend office to meet with the Trooper. While there, the subject admitted to shooting the

animal from the road while it was on private property and then walking onto the property to retrieve the animal without

consent of the landowner. The subject had an Ochoco deer tag and shot the deer within the Maury unit. While the Trooper

was talking with the subject, information was provided by an additional Trooper that the subject may have committed another crime involving a bear the month prior. Subsequent investigation revealed that the subject shot a bear without a tag. After shooting the bear, the subject then purchased a fall bear tag, however, did not check the bear in with ODFW and discarded all the meat only taking the head. After going to the deer kill site, the Trooper went to the subject’s residence where he seized equipment used in the bear case. The following citations were issued to the subject: Unlawful Take Mule Deer, Fail to Check in Black Bear with ODFW within Ten Days, Possession of Illegally Taken Game Parts,Criminal Trespass with Firearm, Unlawful Take Black Bear and One criminal citation - Waste of Game Mammal. The following actions were taken on the subject: One Mule Deer Seized and Salvaged, One Black Bear Skull Seized, One Large Elk Rack Seized and One Rifle and Bow Seized.

Reported Kill of Cougar: After Failed Attempt to Purchase Tag

A F&W Trooper from the Tillamook office received a call from a subject who self-reported killing a cougar while deer hunting. The subject stated he was hiking across his neighbor’s property in order to access USFS land to hunt deer when a cougar appeared in front of him in close proximity. The subject stated he was scared of the cougar, so he shot at it once and then ran. The subject circled back and notice that he had actually killed the cougar. After attempting to purchase a tag for the animal, the subject then contacted Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife to report the kill. The Cougar was seized and the subject was cited for No Big Game Tag.
