Releasing the Tension
INA, a brand of the Schaeffler Group, is a global leader in valve train, timing control,
FEAD (Front End Accessory Drive), and timing belt tensioning technology.
M
odern engine designs have
placed huge demands on belt
tensioning systems to provide
acceptable belt life and eliminate audible
noise.
Most vehicles are equipped with
serpentine belts which require calibrated
tensioning control from the tensioning
mechanisms.
As with clutch design, the Timing and
FEAD system, has a major role to play in
isolating the engine irregularity to ensure
optimum component life and eliminate
noise.
When replacing these components it
is important that the system is viewed
in it’s entirety. The primary cause of a
particular tensioner failure must first be
established.
INA, as an OEM supplier, has developed a
comprehensive range of FEAD tensioners,
timing belt tensioners and kits, OAP’s
(Overrun Alternator Pulley) and hydraulic
valve lifters for the South African
Automotive Aftermarket.
Most technicians are not aware of the
Overrun Alternator Pulley (OAP) which
is fitted to most vehicle alternators to
smooth the belt drive and eliminate
noise. Tensioner failure is normally
symptomatic as a result of OAP
influence.
The belt system has evolved to be as
technologically advanced as any other
complex system on a modern vehicle.
The old methods of feeling the belt tension
by hand have long given way to the
introduction of hydraulic and mechanical
type tensioner mechanisms which allow for
automatic belt tensioning.
Many technicians will blame the
tensioner for repeated failure and
neglect to check the OAP. INA’s
range of tensioners and OAP’s have
been designed for each specific vehicle
application as reflected by the OE
fitment of these components to most
vehicles. In isolated instances, it is
necessary to fit an OAP to a vehicle
not originally fitted with one due to the
engine characteristic change due to
wear.
SCHAEFFLER: ABR Combo - 180412
On timing belt tensioning systems, INA
OE based tensioners and kits are critical
to the correct function of this system.
Poor quality replacement components
might appear attractive at first glance,
but beware as failure of sub standard
parts could cause complete engine
destruction and to a lesser extent,
reduced engine performance, which
translates to a higher fuel bill.
INA components are packaged with comprehensive fitment instructions and
the end user has access to the Schaeffler Technical Hotline (0800 41 2106) and
website (www.schaeffler-aftermarket.com) for fitment advice and ensuring that
the correct component is supplied. Always insist on the exceptional quality
offered by INA replacement parts.
